Vocational qualifications provide a broad
introduction to a particular career or
industry sector - for example, manufacturing,
art and design, or health and social care.
Vocational qualifications can be helpful if
you already know what job you want and enjoy
learning practical skills.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)
demonstrate the skills and knowledge required
for particular occupations. They cover all the
main aspects of an occupation, including
current best practice, the ability to adapt to
future requirements and the knowledge and
understanding to enable an employee to perform
well. There are no age limits and no special
entry requirements for studying towards an
NVQ.
Distance learning and e-learning
E-learning can give you the freedom and
flexibility to learn when and where you want
and at your own pace. You can study a wide
range of subjects at any level, and e-learning
can be ideal if the subject you're interested
in isn't available nearby. E-learning makes
use of
information and communications technology to
provide innovative ways to learn. Distance
learning covers learning remotely on courses
such as home study or 'self-study' courses,
which can be combined with e-learning.
Learning for free
Many courses are free and there are lots of
opportunities to learn for free online,
including computer and language courses. You
can also get free internet access at your
local UK online centre or library.
Which courses are free ?
Free courses for everyone include literacy,
language and numeracy skills:
• courses to help with reading, writing and
number skills
• courses to improve English if it's not your
first language
If you claim a benefit or rely on somebody
else who claims a benefit, you may get your
fees for other courses paid in full or in
part.
